To every person caught up in the sea of misery washing across Europe and the Middle East , fleeing war and fear and pain: we are here to say that we hear you. We are ashamed of our governments. We hear, and see, the hell that is your lives at the moment. We are mums, dads, students, actors, musicians, nurses, cooks, business people, grandparents and school children. We are everyone.
We are ashamed of the failure to act by our alleged leaders, and so are taking action ourselves to coĺlect clothes, money, food and medical supplies in village halls and community centres and schools across the country; we are fighting for your safe passage; we are traveling to you to work as volunteers at your side on the ground across Europe and the Middle East to help you retain your dignity and your hope; we are cooking thousands of meals to try and get a little hot food to you when hungry and cold; we are fighting to change our governments' refusal to welcome only a tiny number of you when you so desperately need a safe place to be; and we are fighting to lobby local, national and international policy makers to reconnect with their humanity and see this horror as the disgrace it is.
You cannot hear us and our growing calls of outrage at the way you are being betrayed by those who should be helping you. Our leaders are not leading; so we are simply taking action locally and internationally in a million ways to offer you all the support we can. We are frustrated and furious and fierce in our stand with you.
You cannot hear us. But please know that we hear you.
